Church Council Meeting - May 15, 2002

Cheryl Patrick called the church council meeting for May 15, 2002 to order at 7:40 P.M. in the Shelton Congregational Church Library. The meeting was opened the meeting with a prayer offered by Rev. Greg Schmidt. A quorum [6] was met, with 8 being present [P] and 5 being absent [A].

The minutes of the April 19th, 2002 meting were reviewed and accepted with one correction noted. The Consecration Sunday program to run Sept-October not Sept-March. Cheryl Patrick then called on the officers and committee members for their reports.

Minister-Greg Schmidt-Greg reported on that Emily Jennings, a representative from the Safe House would be a guest speaker at our May 19, 2002 worship service. She would answer any questions after services. The Safe House has offered to host coffee hour in the future. Greg also reported Sadie Patrick would be the only confirmand this year. She will be confirmed during the Children's Day on June 9th, 2002.

Treasurer-Bruce Nichols-Bill Barker reported that during the month of April the church had expenses of $11,115.07 and income of $8,825.52 for a net deficit of $2,289.55. Most of this month's deficit can be attributed to non-budgeted pass-through expenses. At the end of April, the net worth for the church was $325,765.70 and the January 1st, total was $331,004.70. However, these figures do not reflect an additional decrease due to the recent withdrawal of $8,400. From our Vanguard Funds.

Christian Education-Jan Wells-Betty Ogden-Betty reported on the Christian Education meeting held on May 11th, at the home of Jan Wells. Discussed were the Retreat and the great time everyone had. Emily Jennings, Safe House Rep. would be our guest speaker on May 19th. A summer school schedule has been made. Ten people will be needed. Sunday School sign-up will be Sept. 9th and classes will start Sept, 15th, 2002. The CE committee and teacher will meet at the church on June 20th at 7:30 PM to clean out supply cabinets and organize supplies.

Trustees-Glenn Wells-Bill reported on work completed on workday. Glenn and Greg fixed the kitchen windows. Fran Russell painted the railing on the corner. It was suggested that the front door be painted. The next workday is scheduled for June 22nd at 9 AM. Bill also reported that the pipes from the basement to the two bathrooms have been replaced. The cleaning of the carpeting in the sanctuary cost $30.00 and Bill Barker provided the labor.

Youth Group-Darleen Conklin-The Senior Youth Group would man the food tent at the June 8th, 2002 tag sale. Bill Barker will allow the use of his grill again this year. Gene Ogden will allow the use of his canopy again this year. The youth group received a thank you from the Land Trust for they're clean up efforts at the Nicholdale Farm. Shifts will be made for the food tent and Darleen will speak to the group about manning the table at the Relay for Life.

Deacons-Gene Ogden-Gene reported that Deacons served Communion on the first of the month. Gene has arranged for members of the youth group to serve Communion in July and August. The group will set-up, serve, and clean up. Gene will have a special meeting at the end of June to practice for the serving of communion.

Outreach-Lesley Barker-Lesley reported that Spooner House would be served on May 18th, 2002. Hunger Awareness Sunday was April 28th, 2002 and enjoyed by all that attended. A total of $145.00 was raised in the Crop Walk held on May 5th. The Relay for Life will be held on June 8th and sign up sheets for walkers and for manning the table (#6) will be posted. Plan to sell lemonade and water and will also have brochures and church history books available.

Membership-Walt Crosby-Leigh Schultz-Bill reported the committee met on May 8th, 2002. The committee has created an activity list. All members will have a specific job. They plan on publishing a brochure, in color, and updated photos. Next meeting will be June 11th, 2002 at 7 PM in the church library.

Personnel-Bill Barker-Bill reported receiving two submissions for the church survey. He asked for a one-month extension to complete the survey. He will have it completed for the July council meeting.

Fundraising-Betty Ogden-Betty reported that all plans have been completed for the cabaret/dinner scheduled for May 18th, 2002. All squares for the quilt project have been completed and turned in. Yankee Candle will start soon. Photo album raffle raised $70.00. A thank you letter has been sent to Lisa Noga. Plans for the June 8th tag sale are being made. A June raffle is being discussed. Bill Barker has offered a genealogy package.

Women's Fellowship-Lucille Wells-Lucille reported no meeting would be held in June. Instead a pot luck luncheon would be held at the home of Betty Ogden on July 20th, 2002 at 2 PM. The quilt will be hand tied at that time. All women who worked on a square would be invited to this luncheon.

The next council meeting will be held on June 19th, 2002 at 7:30 PM in the Shelton Congregational Church Library. The Rev. Dr. Greg Schmidt then led the council in saying The Lord's Prayer. The meeting was then adjourned at 9:00 PM.
